What MCP is and why it matters now
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets language models interact securely and in real time with external data and tools. Unlike static integrations, it acts as a universal port between generative AI and enterprise systems — databases, APIs, ERP, CRM — without relying only on a frozen RAG index.
In 2026, the conversation has moved from demo to system: leadership wants EBITDA impact, risk control, and auditability. MCP meets that bar when it ships with governance.
The runtime-access revolution
The classic RAG limit is not the idea of retrieval — it is the cost of keeping data fresh when systems change every minute. MCP lets the agent call tools at runtime with defined permissions and per-action traceability.
